Tensions have been simmering within Rick Grimes since he first laid eyes on Pete sitting on the front porch of his house – and developed a soft spot for his wife Jessie.
He emotions reached the boiling point on Sunday night’s episode of The Walking Dead as he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Furious after learning that Pete had been beating his wife, Rick’s decision to take charge led to a bloody fight on the street inside the walls of the Alexandria Safe-Zone.
Street fight: Rick Grimes got into a bloody fight on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead
With their hands around one another’s throats and blood covering their faces, Rick and Pete tried to choke one another as they tumbled on the floor fighting.
Jessie, who tried to pull her husband off the police officer, suffered a punch to the face and Rick pushed son Carl away when he tried to intervene.
Instructed to stop by Deanna, Rick pulled out a gun and asked: ‘Or what? You’re going to kick me out?’
Pulled a gun: The former sheriff’s deputy pulled a gun out when Alexandria Safe-Zone leader Deanna told him to stop fighting
With one hand keeping Pete on the ground, he said: ‘You still don’t get it, none of you do. We know what needs to be done and we do it. We’re the ones who live. You, you just sit and plan and hesitate. You pretend like you know when you don’t.
‘I wish things weren’t what they are, but you want to live? You want this place to stay standing? Your way of doing things is gone. Things don’t get better because you want them to. Starting right now we have to live in the real world. We have to control who lives here.’
He added: ‘If you don’t fight, you die. I’m not going to stand by…’ But before he could finish his sentence, Michonne knocked him out with a blow to the head.
Knocked him out: Michonne didn’t let Rick finish his sentence and knocked him out as his son Carl watched
The penultimate episode of the hit AMC show’s fifth season saw Deanna still struggling to come to terms with the death of her son Aiden, who was attacked by walkers when the group made a disastrous run for supplies on last week’s episode.
After burning a note from Carol, which read ‘we’re truly sorry for your loss’, she watched a taped interview with Nicholas who survived the deadly trip.
While Nicholas told Deanna that Glenn and Noah had been trying to kill him and denied he left the others to die, Glenn had a different version of events.
Taped interview: Nicholas told Deanna that Glenn and Noah tried to kill during the zombie attack
‘He was going to run,’ Glenn told Rick. ‘All he had to do was hold the door, but he panicked. Noah, I had him, I held his hand. I tried. I watched him die.’
Viewers later saw a furious Glenn confront Nicholas about his cowardly ways.
‘Those four people you lost on that run? That’s on you. And Noah? That’s on you too. Those five lives? You have to carry that. People like you are supposed to be dead but these walls went up just in time, so you’re not,’ he said.
In his face: Glenn confronted Nicholas and blamed him for Noah’s death and the four others that Aiden told him about before he was impaled and eaten by zombies
Nicholas said: ‘Who the hell do you think you are?’
‘I’m someone who knows who you are. I know what you did and it’s not going to happen again,’ Glenn told him.
But as Nicholas retrieved a gun he had stashed in the forest, viewers were left thinking this was not the end of their discussion.
Carol, meanwhile, started Rick’s spiral of fury by telling him more details of Pete’s reign of terror over Jessie and their son Sam.
Getting ugly: Carol and Sam watched as Rick and Pete fought in the middle of street
‘I talked to Sam some more,’ he said. ‘He said his mom put a bolt on the inside of his closet and tells him to lock himself in sometimes and not come out until the morning. He said he can hear his dad yelling, things breaking, his mom crying.
‘Last month it got quiet right in the middle of it and he went out and found her lying on the floor unconscious, bleeding. Pete was just sitting on the porch.’
Confronting Jessie, Rick said: ‘He’s hitting you. He’s hurting you. It has to stop.’
Candid conversation: Rick confronted Jessie about her abusive husband and said it had to stop
Jessie protested that things would get better, but Rick refused to take no for an answer.
‘If you don’t fight, you die and I don’t want you to die. I can help you, I can keep you and your boys safe. All you have to do is say yes,’ he told her.
‘Would you do this for someone else? Would you do this for anyone?’ Jessie asked.
When Rick said he wouldn’t, Jessie whispered ‘yes’.
Perfect timing: Pete arrived just as Jessie agreed to help from Rick
Sasha, meanwhile, struggled to come to terms with Noah’s death and was found roaming the forest and shooting walkers by Michonne and Rosita.
After the trio fought off a pack of walkers, Sasha broke down in tears.
‘Noah. I told him he wouldn’t make it,’ she said.
Trouble coping: Sasha picked off walkers from the watch tower and went out hunting for more
While all hell was breaking loose inside the walls, Daryl and Aaron were out looking for new recruits and were shocked to find a girl dead and tied to a tree.
And romance appeared to be blossoming between Carl and Enid after Carl followed her out of Alexandria and joined her running through the forest.
When the youngsters heard a large pack of walkers approaching they hid inside a hollow tree trunk.
Hiding spot: Carl and Enid hid inside a hollow tree trunk
Enid, who had previously told Carl he scared her, said: ‘It’s their world. We’re just living in it.’
Carl responded by touching her hand, but quickly turned away.
‘Cool – you’re afraid of me too,’ she said.
The 90-minute finale of The Walking Dead will air on Sunday on AMC.
Familiar letter: Daryl was out searching for new recruits with Aaron and came across a walker tied to a tree with a W carved in her forehead
