Is Cupertino finally gearing up to introduce a new version of its set-top-box, which has not seen a refresh in three years?
Thinking about picking up one of those newly-discounted $ 69 Apple TVs? You might want to hold off for a bit, because word has it that a new model is on tap.
Citing unnamed sources, Buzzfeed News on Friday reported that Cupertino is finally gearing up to introduce a new version of its set-top-box, which has not seen a refresh in three years. The tech giant is reportedly planning to unveil the new Apple TV at its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference this June, along with a new App Store marketplace for the device.
The updated box will reportedly feature Apple’s latest A8 chip, “or a variant of it,” as well as a “dramatic increase in on-board storage” beyond the current 8GB to allow for new apps to be installed on it. It will also boast a new and improved operating system and user interface with support for Siri voice control, so you can start watching a program with your voice.
At this point, there’s no word as to how much the updated device will cost, but it will most likely get a bump from the current $ 69 price, possibly back up to $ 99.
“Sources say Apple’s new Apple TV is a significant overhaul of the device, one intended to undergird Apple’s vision of what the TV viewing experience should be, and to raise the table stakes in a set-top box market cluttered with barely differentiated devices from Amazon, Roku, and others,” Buzzfeed News reported.
Meanwhile, current Apple TV owners are about to get a new perk—HBO. The premium network’s new streaming service HBO NOW will debut on Apple TV and iOS devices in April for $ 14.99, offering access to HBO’s full lineup of content, from original series and documentaries to movies and sports programming.
