The legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach is still giving to his North Carolina players — even after his death. Tim Breedlove, the Charlotte-based trustee of the trust that bears the late coach’s name, said Thursday that letters were sent earlier this month to each of the players who lettered for Smith’s Tar Heel teams — about 180 in all during his 36-year tenure, which ended in 1997. The letter says Smith directed that following his death, each letterman was to be sent a $ 200 check with the message “enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.” The Hall of Fame coach died Feb. 7 at age 83.
The U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper says she used her 30-day suspension to “reassess my life and career,” has entered therapy, and launched a personal blog. Solo’s husband, former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens, was arrested on drunken driving charges while driving her in a U.S. Soccer van. Earlier, domestic violence charges against Solo were dismissed. In her first blog post, Solo said she met with the team about her troubles. “I’d been a mess emotionally and mentally. … One of my teammates gave me the biggest hug and said, ‘Hope, apology accepted.’ That meant so much.”
