MIT Wins Hyperloop Design Challenge

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) kick some-more than 115 tyro engineering teams from 27 states and 20 countries to win a weekend’s Hyperloop pattern competition.

On Friday and Saturday, hundreds of students collected during Texas AM University to benefaction their skeleton for altogether Hyperloop pod design. They were judged on a accumulation of criteria, including aberration of design, full Hyperloop complement applicability, turn of pattern detail, and strength of ancillary tests. The MIT organisation walked away with the Best Overall Design Award.

“MIT has been concerned in so many technological breakthroughs in a past century,” organisation captain Philippe Kirschen, a master’s tyro in aeronautics and astronautics, pronounced in a statement. “It only creates clarity we would assistance allege what competence be a destiny of transportation.”

But a MIT Hyperloop Team is not a only group headed to California this summer to try out a antecedent on a initial Hyperloop Test Track. Twenty-two tyro crews will make a pilgrimage. That includes Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands), leader of a Pod Innovation Award, as good as a University of Wisconsin-Madison, Virginia Tech, and University of California Irvine—each of that took home a Pod Technical Excellence Award.

“Congratulations to a finalists and all a tyro teams who competed in a first-ever SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition,” John Sharp, chancellor of a Texas AM University System, pronounced in a statement.

Aerospace Hyperloop—a finalist representing a Texas university, will also pierce on to a foe weekend in California.

“It is a wish that everybody who participated uses a movement from this ancestral assembly of immature innovators to go out into a universe and continue to emanate and innovate,” Texas AM President Michael Young added. “This weekend’s foe proves a destiny is in really good hands with such an moving and gifted organisation of immature people.”

Technical awards were also given to tyro teams whose pattern displayed superb technical consequence in subsystem and design.

The Hyperloop is a brainchild of SpaceX and Tesla arch Elon Musk, who in Aug 2013 unveiled plans for a $6 billion complement that would concede for high-speed transport between U.S. cities.

But Musk is bustling with other things, so he handed a plan off to transportation-system manufacturer Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, that last week filed construction permits with California’s Kings County to start building in a Quay Valley after this year.

Groundbreaking and element construction of a five-mile lane is slated for mid-2016, forward of an central open opening by 2018.
