ROME — Fleeing poverty, fight or other assault in Africa, a Middle East and Asia, migrants have died by a thousands in a Mediterranean over a years while perplexing to strech Europe.
The accurate figure is unknown: Authorities usually count a bodies found in a sea, on shore, or on house boats where migrants can die of lust or exposure. Survivors mostly tell of associate passengers who mislaid their lives during sea, though a bodies were never found — as might be a box with hundreds of people pronounced to be blank after a capsizing of a vessel off Libya on Sunday.
Military and municipal rescuers frequently find smaller numbers of bodies off a coasts of Libya and Italy. Here is a list of some of a deadliest migrant vessel disasters, formed on bodies recovered or survivor accounts:
Christmas, 1996: 300 believed drowned in a waters between Malta and Sicily.
June 20, 2003: 50 corpses found, 160 migrants missing, 41 survivors in a plague off Tunisia.
Oct. 20, 2003: At slightest 70 passed in waters off Sicily.
May 12, 2008: 50 passed off Sicily, including 47 who died aboard after pang from exposure.
May 6, 2011: Boat carrying some-more than 600 migrants is shipwrecked off Libyan coast. Hundreds reported missing.
June 2, 2011: At slightest 270 blank from vessel that carried 700 aboard off Tunisian coast.
July 10, 2012: Motorized rubber vessel deflates between Libya and little Sicilian island of Lampedusa, 54 dead.
December 2012: At slightest 21 people perish, and 6 listed as blank after vessel sinks off Greek island of Lesbos.
Aug. 10, 2013: Six migrants drown, 94 discovered some 15 meters (50 feet) off a swarming swimming beach in Catania.
Oct. 3, 2013: 366 people die, 155 tarry after plague off Lampedusa, Italy.
February 2014: At slightest 15 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa die while swimming from Moroccan seashore as they try to strech Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Rubber bullets were dismissed during them where they were in a seas.
Sept. 10, 2014: Some 500 Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians and Sudanese are feared drowned after their vessel was rammed by another vessel of tellurian traffickers off Malta.
January 2014: 12 people, many of them children, drown when vessel overturns nearby Greek island of Farmakonis.
Sept. 14, 2014: Libyan navy reports 26 discovered from a vessel carrying some 250 migrants off Libyan coast, some 200 blank and feared dead.
April 12, 2015: Boat capsizes off Libya, 9 reliable dead. Some of a 144 survivors tell assist workers that about 400 aboard drowned.
