Barry Melrose breaks down the significance of Auston Matthews’ four-goal game in his NHL debut. (1:07)
Fans looking to buy an Auston Matthews jersey should be able to do so in the coming days.
The uniform of the No. 1 draft pick and the Toronto Maple Leafs center is expected to be available to buy on Fanatics and across its sites, which includes the NHL and Maple Leafs online store, in the next 48 hours.
Auston Matthews’ effortless dominance during his four-goal night is just another sign that today’s young players are the real deal. And he’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Auston Matthews scored on his first three shots against the Senators. He later added a fourth goal, giving the No. 1 overall pick of the Leafs a historic NHL debut.
During his four-goal NHL debut Wednesday night, fans might have been frustrated by the fact that they couldn’t purchase his jersey.
NHL Players’ Association spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon told ESPN that licensees can’t use a player’s name and image until that player has technically made the team. The player must then sign the group licensing agreement.
Weatherdon couldn’t confirm that Matthews did so, but did say that, in anticipation of the demand, the union had discussions with his representation at CAA and didn’t anticipate an issue.

Jerseys were available last year well before No. 1 pick Connor McDavid played his first game with the Edmonton Oilers. Weatherdon said that was an exception because the team gave him his number right away and said that he had made the team.
The Maple Leafs did not immediately say Matthews had won a job and didn’t give him his No. 34 until the end of September.
The NFL and the NBA make jerseys available immediately after players are drafted. Major League Baseball players have their jerseys for sale as soon as they make the big league roster. Tim Tebow’s Mets jersey is an exception because Tebow’s deal is directly with baseball’s jersey manufacturer Majestic.
