Hackers broke into the U.S. Navy’s database and swiped the personal information of more than 130,000 sailors, including Social Security numbers and names.

Sailors affected by the October breach will be notified in the coming weeks, the Navy said Wednesday.

“The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously — this is a matter of trust for our sailors,” Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Admiral Robert Burke said in a statement.

The unknown thieves hacked into a contractor’s laptop last month, gaining access to the sensitive information of 134,386 current and former U.S. sailors.

On Oct. 27, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services told officials that one laptop operated by an employee working on a Navy contract had been compromised.

Burke said the investigation of the breach is in its early stages, and the Navy is “working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach.”

It’s unclear who is behind the break-in — or what the attackers did with the stolen information.

“At this stage of the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest misuse of the information that was compromised,” the Navy said.
